The Indiana State Sycamores were defeated 17-10 by Illinois State in a recent Homecoming battle at Hancock Stadium. Illinois State’s defense played a pivotal role in limiting the Sycamores' scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Illinois State Head Coach Brock Spack observed that his team had its moments in all phases of the game, highlighting the defense's strong performance, especially in the end zone, which enabled them to secure the win.
A key defensive play occurred in the second quarter when Illinois State’s Key Crowell intercepted a Sycamore pass and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown, giving the Redbirds six points. Crowell later stated that practicing the play all week helped him recognize and jump the route for the interception during the game.
The Redbirds’ defense was led by Tye Niekamp, who recorded 12 tackles in the contest, including one tackle for loss, a pass breakup, and two quarterback hurries. This performance pushed Niekamp past 400 career tackles, making him the fifth Redbird in school history to achieve the milestone. Niekamp remarked that if someone had told him four years prior that he would reach 400 tackles, he would have thought they were "crazy." He also acknowledged that while the offense struggled, the defense supported them.
Other notable defensive efforts for Illinois State included Ben Harman, who finished with nine tackles, two tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Harman noted he felt he was getting more one-on-one opportunities early in the game, allowing him to pressure the quarterback. La’Shavion Brown and Solomon Oduma each also contributed nine tackles.
On the offensive side for Illinois State, points were difficult to come by. Running back Victor Dawson continued a career-best scoring season with his sixth touchdown of the year. His 3-yard touchdown run gave the Redbirds their first lead, 10-7, following Michael Cosentino’s first-quarter field goal. Dawson led Illinois State’s rushing attack with 57 yards on 21 carries. The touchdown marked a career high for Dawson in single-season touchdowns.
Illinois State’s offense totaled 111 rushing yards on 41 attempts, averaging 2.7 yards per carry, with Dawson accounting for more than half of the team’s rushing attempts. Quarterback Beckham Pellant completed 16 of 32 passes for 174 yards and threw two interceptions. The Redbirds finished with 285 total yards. Ethan Loss led Illinois State receivers with five receptions for 58 yards, while Ian Willis added four catches for 44 yards, and Luke Mailander recorded three receptions for 38 yards.
Illinois State struggled to sustain offensive drives, converting only four of 13 third-down attempts. The team also committed 10 penalties for 93 yards, which hindered their ability to build momentum. Despite these offensive challenges, Illinois State held a seven-point advantage in the final stretch and withstood Indiana State’s push to the final minute, ultimately holding on for the 17-10 victory.
With the win, Illinois State improved its record to 6-2. Coach Spack commented to his team that good teams do win close games, stating that they are not in the business of apologizing for winning.
